When the weather turns cold, a lot of our clients notice the same thing: skin that feels tight after washing, makeup that clings to dry patches and a dull, tired look. Low humidity, indoor heating and hot showers all pull moisture out of your skin. Hyaluronic acid is one of the easiest ways to put it back.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a moisture-binding molecule your body already makes. It's a humectant, meaning it attracts water and holds onto it, and it can hold many times its own weight in water. As we get older and our skin deals with sun and environmental stress, our natural HA levels drop, which contributes to dryness and fine lines.
What it does for your skin
- Deep hydration: draws water into the skin to keep it soft and comfortable.
- A plumper look: well-hydrated skin looks smoother, so fine lines are less noticeable and skin has a fresh, dewy finish.
- Barrier support: hydrated skin is better at protecting itself from wind, cold and indoor heat.
- Calm skin: it helps soothe the irritation and redness that often come with dryness.
It's also acne-safe and works for every skin type, including oily skin. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and dehydration often makes it produce even more oil. More on that in Skincare Myths: Sunscreen, Moisturizer and Pores.
How to use it for the best results
- Apply to damp skin. HA works best when there's water for it to hold onto. Use it right after cleansing or after a hydrating toner like Face Reality Moisture Balance Toner.
- Seal it in. Follow with a moisturizer to lock that hydration in.
- Help your environment. In very dry air, a humidifier at night makes a real difference.
- Look for layered formulas. Serums with more than one size of HA molecule hydrate at different depths.
Our favorite hydrators
Face Reality hydraRemedy Gel Serum is the one we recommend most. It hydrates, supports your barrier and calms the skin, and it's a great fit for stressed, sensitive or red skin and for anyone dealing with the pink marks left after breakouts. For oily skin that still feels tight, Hydrabalance adds lightweight moisture without heaviness.

What to pair it with
- Vitamin C to brighten dull winter skin and support collagen.
- Niacinamide to strengthen your barrier and calm redness.
- Glycerin, another humectant that pulls in moisture.
- Ceramides to seal hydration in and protect your barrier.
- Vitamin A. HA is a great partner for retinoids because it offsets dryness. See Topical Vitamin A.
The takeaway
Dry season doesn't have to mean dull, flaky skin. Adding hyaluronic acid, applying it the right way and pairing it with a good moisturizer can keep your skin soft, smooth and comfortable all year.
