Microneedling is one of our favorite treatments for softening fine lines, smoothing texture and fading dark spots and scars. But here is what most people don't realize: the treatment itself is only half of it. The tiny channels created in your skin are what kick-start new collagen and elastin, and those same channels mean your skin absorbs everything more deeply for the next several days.
That's great news when you're using the right products, and not so great when you're using the wrong ones. This is the home routine our estheticians walk every client through so they get the most out of every session.
First, what to expect
Mild redness and a little sensitivity are normal and usually fade within a few days. Most clients start to see a difference within about a week, and results keep building with each session, typically over a series of 3 to 6 treatments. Your job during that first week is simple: keep skin calm, hydrated and protected.

A real Puresthetics client after 3 microneedling treatments and consistent home care: before (top) and after (bottom). Individual results vary.
Days 1 to 7: keep it gentle
For the first 5 to 7 days, think cleanse, moisturize, protect, nothing more.
- Cleanse gently. Use a creamy, non-stripping cleanser with lukewarm water and pat dry. Face Reality Barrier Balance Creamy Cleanser cleans without disrupting your healing skin barrier.
-
Moisturize for your skin type. Your skin barrier is doing a lot of repair work, so support it twice a day.
- Normal skin: Barrier Care Gel Cream
- Oily skin: Face Reality Clearderma Moisturizer
- Wear SPF every single day. Freshly treated skin is extra vulnerable to sun, and sun exposure can undo the brightening you're working toward. Brilliant Defense SPF 50 is our pick, even on cloudy days.

What to skip that first week
Hold off on anything "active" for about a week. That includes:
- Exfoliating acids like mandelic, glycolic, lactic and salicylic
- Retinol and vitamin A products
- Scrubs, brushes and exfoliating tools
- Fragranced products and anything that stings
Because your skin is absorbing so deeply right now, these can cause irritation instead of results. Don't worry, they're coming back soon.
After week one: bring back your results-boosters
Once your skin feels completely back to normal, usually after 5 to 7 days, you can ease back into your regular routine. This is when your treatment serums really shine, because you're supporting all that new collagen your skin is building. Bring them back in this order:
- Your AM serum first. The right one depends on your skin type, so ask us if you're not sure which is yours.
- Then your PM serums. Reintroduce them once your AM serum is going comfortably.
- Retinol last. It's always the final step back into your routine.
And keep that SPF going. Daily sun protection is the single best way to protect your results long term.
Keep skin renewing between treatments
Once you're fully healed, the goal is to keep your skin cells turning over. Regular cell renewal keeps texture smooth, helps fade dark spots and lets fresh, collagen-rich skin come to the surface, so your microneedling results keep building between sessions instead of stalling.
These are the products we reach for to keep skin renewing:
- Vivant Exfol A: a vitamin A treatment that speeds up cell turnover for smoother, firmer looking skin.
- Vivant Mandelic Serum 8%: a gentle mandelic acid exfoliant that refines texture and evens tone, and is well suited to sensitive and deeper skin tones.

Is microneedling right for your skin?
Microneedling works for most skin types, including sensitive skin, and with the right technique it's a safe option for deeper skin tones too. It's especially popular with our clients in their 40s and beyond who want firmer, smoother skin without surgery or real downtime.
